Before finishing the complete series of LOST, I'd like to express what my thoughts on the show are. I know, I know, "Finish the series, then blog about it, dammit!" is what most readers would say. It's not that I am intentionally putting it off, nor am I getting bored with it. It's just that things have been coming up recently that distract me from it. I do have a life outside from sitting in my room watching LOST on Netflix. Come to think of it, the only time I do have to sit around and watch a few episodes is when there's absolutely no work orders left to do during a closing shift at work. Often times when that happens, I'll get sucked in to the storyline in such an intense manner that I'll put off a lot of other things afterward and I'll just continue watching it once I'm home. This was the case last week as I flew through season 4 episodes 6-14 in one sitting, and watched episodes 1 and 2 of season 5, in one day! And that is where I now stand; two episodes into season 5 with a lot interest in knowing what will happen next. I know I'll get around to it eventually, especially since I've essentially spoiled some things for myself while browsing through ABC's LOST merchandise page. No big deal, but now it's eating away at me for not knowing exactly what somethings mean. Regardless, here's where I'm at, and what my thoughts on the show currently are.
-This is where a spoiler alert would be placed for those who haven't seen the show and intend to do so, or those who aren't as far in as I am.-
As mentioned before, I am currently 2 episodes in to season 5, and holy hell has it gotten insane. Some of the craziest and most far-fetched things at this point have to be 1) Jacob (and how at this point, Jack and Claire's dad is a "representative" for him) and 2) "Turn the Wheel. Move the Island" (and how turning the wheel has, at this point, sent the island and the current inhabitants into a sort of time-warp where they bounce around through time, both past and future). At this point, the only thing keeping the storyline from seeming as though it makes no sense whatsoever is Daniel Faraday's quote, "Whatever happened, happened." in the sense that everything that happened up until the wheel was turned is going to happen and isn't subject to change. That is until, you guessed it, Faraday changes something, apparently, when he speaks to an antibacterial-suit-wearing Desmond and tells him to travel to, if my memory serves me well, Oxford. After this happens in the show, Desmond wakes up in a fright as Penny tries to calm him down, and all he can tell her is that he has to do what he believes he was told to. Beyond that, I am utterly clueless as to what is going to happen.
Anyway, how crazy is this new storyline? Of the Oceanic Six, Jack's back to saving lives as a doctor, and Kate's a baby snatcher (as she is now Aaron's "mother"), but no longer a wanted criminal. Sun has purchased most control of Paik Heavy Industries (or Paik Automotive) and is currently a single mother, Hurley is back in the looney-bin, and Sayid is Ben's new contract killer! The fact that they returned to civilization didn't strike me as a great writing decision, but who am I to question this brilliant television series? Well, right I was in not questioning because a short 3 years after being back at home, the Island beckons them to return. Of course there's drama here and there in the sense of persuading the six to come back to the Island, and most of them don't take to the idea of going back very well. This without a doubt changes after one of the biggest shockers in the series rounds the corner and presents itself. A celebrity death amongst the Island dwellers, if you will, has occurred that sparks the entire "Bring the Six back to the Island" plot. The death of the all-mighty John Locke. At this point in the series, Locke isn't in the race for "favorite character" in my book, but his death comes as a shock to all, and seeing him in a coffin under the name of "Jeremy Beantham" ultimately raises more questions for LOST enthusiasts.
It's safe to say I've left a lot uncovered, but in relevance to where I stand in the series, the aforementioned events are seemingly the most important ones to state. As far as the whole series has turned out so far, I am INCREDIBLY grateful to those friends who encouraged me to watch this show in the first place, as I am now a big fan. I'll be sure to finish seasons 5 and 6 as quickly as possible so we can all congregate around the water-cooler and discuss the entire series in all of it's brilliance.
I'd like to point out that up to date, and for most of the series now, Desmond Hume has been my absolute favorite character. He's by far the purest character in the series who doesn't piss me off. His desire to get back to Penny throughout the series and the love he expresses for her is incredible, and his lines are by far some of the best amongst the entire character cast. You're one awesome Scott' for the ages!
"I'll see you in another life, brother!" -Desmond Hume
